Owning multiple distilleries enables us to produce various types of malts with unique characteristics.
The variety of whiskies we can achieve by blending these malts is unlimited.
Learning the essence of blending in Scotland, Masataka Taketsuru aimed to produce soft malt whisky like Lowlands in contrast to the Yoichi malt, which is strong like Highlands. He embodied his ideals by building the Miyagikyo distillery.
The climate in Miyagikyo is cool and mild. The distillery is in a mountainous area in the north of the mainland, and located at the junction of two clean rivers, the Hirose river and Nikkawa river.
When constructing the distillery, Masataka told not to cut down trees and use the natural landscape as it is.
Therefore, the paths in the distillery wind through the trees and all the 40 buildings in the sight are built on different height levels in order to preserve the original landscape.
In the hopes of introducing more people to the wonders of whisky, Miyagikyo Distillery offers tours of its facility to interested members of the public. We are sure you will enjoy this opportunity to see how Nikka Whisky is created in this beautiful natural setting.
